What Is Gum Disease?
In this video, Dr. Essence Campbell explains what gum disease is and why early detection is important.
Periodontal disease is a condition that affects the gums and the bone that support your teeth. The most serious part of the disease is bone loss, which can also lead to gum recession over time.
During a comprehensive exam, we take X-rays to evaluate how much bone is supporting your teeth. We also gently measure the gum tissue around each tooth using a small probe. These measurements help us determine whether periodontal disease is present.
Periodontal disease can develop for several reasons. It may be caused by not having regular dental cleanings, and it can also be influenced by genetics. When plaque is not removed, it hardens into tartar within a couple of days. Over time, tartar buildup irritates the gums and damages the bone, leading to recession and bone loss.
Early detection is important because treating periodontal disease sooner can help protect your teeth and oral health long term.
