What Is a Root Canal?

In this video, Dr. Tracie Battle explains what a root canal is and how it can help save an infected tooth.

A root canal is needed when a tooth becomes infected or when a cavity reaches the nerve inside the tooth. In these cases, a root canal is often the best way to save the tooth rather than remove it.

During the procedure, the infected or inflamed nerve tissue is carefully removed. The inside of the tooth is then cleaned and disinfected, and the space is sealed with a filling. After that, the tooth is usually rebuilt and protected with a crown to restore its strength and function.
