What Is a Dental Crown and How Is It Used?

In this video, Dr. Essence Campbell explains what a dental crown is and when it’s used to protect a damaged tooth.

A dental crown is a full-coverage restoration used to protect and strengthen a tooth. During the process, we gently shape the tooth by removing a small amount, usually about a millimeter, so the crown can fit securely. The crown, sometimes called a cap, is then placed over the tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance.

Dental crowns are designed to look and feel like natural teeth while helping preserve the tooth long-term. They can often prevent the need for extraction by protecting a weakened or damaged tooth and restoring normal function, such as chewing and biting.
